Valve Guide Knurling

Hastings has available for the automotive machinist an excellent valve guide knurling kit for repair of valve guides with up to .006 wear.

Valve guide knurling has become a highly recommended repair in the last decade. Many producers of heavy duty engines use a knurled guide as original equipment.

The knurled guide provides controlled lubrication and a controlled bearing area for the valve stem. This allows the clearance fit to be 1/2 of original smooth guide recommendation and aids in stopping oil loss past the valve guide. Guide knurling allows repair of cast integral guides and is even used on replaceable guides because of its performance advantages, and speed of repair.

The Hastings valve guide knurler is the fastest method of guide knurling available and also the most durable.

The resizing arbor which puts the spiral knurl in the guide and actually resizes the guide has four graduated steps which actually wedges or moves the metal without cutting it and breaking it apart. This is very important in the continued durability of the knurled guide.

The finish reamer then machines the resized guide to precision fit and finish.

Guide knurling will help eliminate valve sticking and valve stem scoring. Knurling eliminates the necessity of carrying a large replacement guide inventory, and is considerably less costly than removing and replacing worn guides.

Hastings valve guide knurler kits contain:

1. A speed reducer which operates with a 1/4" or 3/8" drill.

2. Special knurling lubricant.
